"Island" - Spatial Construction

The introductory design course Spatial Construction implements a “learning by making” methodology. This method holds that the sensitivities, considerations, thoughtfulness, and instincts of a good designer are rooted in action and tactility as much as they are in concepts, theories, or verbal explanations. Throughout the course, students will engage a variety of skills such as modeling and drawing, as well as fundamental design problems of materiality, scale, arrangement, and spatial organization.

The course is experimental in nature, and gives a lot of freedom to each student within the confines of the assignments. The end result was a multitude of different and unique designs which reflect each student’s individual sensibilities.
